REVIEW

Amazon.com Review

Horrormeister Koontz looks heavenward for inspiration in his newest suspense thriller, which is chock-full of signs, portents, angels, and one somewhat second-rate devil, a murky and undercharacterized guy named Junior Cain who throws his beloved wife off a fire tower on an Oregon mountain and spends the rest of the novel waiting for the retribution that will surely come. But not before a series of tragedies ensues that convince Junior that someone or something named Bartholomew is out to exact vengeance for that crime and the series of other murders that follow.Bartholomew’s own troubles begin with his birth, which transpires moments after his father is killed in a traffic accident as he is taking his wife to the hospital, and continue with the loss of his eyes at the tender age of 3. Young Bartholomew has visionary gifts, though to his mother, a nice lady who’s renowned for her pie-making abilities as well as her sweetly innocent nature, he’s just a particularly smart kid who can read and write before his second birthday. Eventually, Bartholomew regains his sight, Junior Cain gets his comeuppance, and fate conspires to bring love into the Pie Lady’s life, reward the faithful, and put a happy ending on this genre-bending tale. Koontz will no doubt rocket right to the top of the bestseller list with this inventive, if somewhat slower-paced, read. –Jane Adams

From Publishers Weekly

The premise behind Koontz’s new novel is the same that buoyed Michael Crichton’s TimelineDthat there exist multitudes of alternate universes, each varying only slightly from the next. Whereas Crichton used the idea to generate high adventure, however, Koontz employs it to create powerful emotion tinged with spiritual wonder. That emotion, which rocks characters and will shake readers, marks this as one of Koontz’s most affecting novelsDand he’s written a lot of them. But there’s else in this fitfully suspenseful, sprawling story of good vs. evil that will leave readers wishing Koontz would make better friends with his delete key. Above all, there’s the villain, Junior Cain, whose opening homicidal act will shock readers like ice water on the spine. Koontz enlivens dashing Junior with lots of neat touchesDe.g., he develops psychosomatic afflictions (vomiting, boils) after each killDbut Junior seems built from the outside in, more a pile of tics than a full-fledged human. On the side of good, the characters are more engaging, especially two psychospiritually gifted children and Thomas Vanadium, the magic-working priest-turned-cop who gets on Junior’s case like a pit bull. Vanadium’s lust for justice will galvanize readers, as will the trials and triumphs of the children, particularly the boy, Bartholomew, who Junior seesDin one working out of Koontz’s theme of the interconnectedness of all lifeDas his mortal enemy and seeks to destroy. The potency of that theme and Bartholomew’s wisdom in the face of personal tragedy provide the novel with great uplift, in spite of its wildly convoluted story line and excessive verbiage. (Dec. 26) Forecast: Note the pub date: Koontz has the week after Christmas all to himself. Plans include major ad/promo, 12-copy displays, simultaneous BDD Audio and Random large-print edition and, most importantly, a preview excerpt in each copy of the mass market of False Memory, on sale one month before. Like Koontz’s other novels, this will be a serious bestsellerDperhaps even a #1.

REVIEW

Amazon.com Review

Two disgraced former Secret Service officers team up to solve a series of copy-cat crimes in this exciting new thriller by a master of the game. Sean King was momentarily distracted when a presidential candidate he’d been guarding was assassinated a few feet from where he stood, and Michelle Maxwell left the Service under a similar cloud when she lost a “protectee” to an ingenious kidnapping scheme, events told in Baldacci’s typical terse, fast-paced style in Split Second. Now partners in a private investigation firm in a small Virginia town, they’re hired to investigate a burglary at the home of a wealthy local family. But even before the chief suspect in the break-in meets his death in a gruesome slaying reminiscent of a serial killer long since caught and punished, King and Maxwell get caught up in a string of other murders, each of which copies the techniques of another madman, from San Francisco’s Zodiac Killer to Chicago’s infamous John Wayne Gacy. While the two protagonists aren’t especially complex or well-developed, the action never stops, and Baldacci’s trademark pacing keeps the reader turning pages until the denouement, which unfortunately isn’t quite as satisfying as the rest of the novel. –Jane Adams

From Publishers Weekly

Baldacci’s last book, Split Second, was a relatively weak offering from this bestselling author, sunk by a cartoonish villain and absurd plot. But it did introduce two of Baldacci’s (Absolute Power, etc.) most memorable characters, former Secret Service agents Sean King and Michelle Maxwell, in business together as private investigators in smalltown Wrightsburg, Va. Baldacci is back in form, and King and Maxwell reappear in this utterly absorbing, complex mystery-thriller that spins in unexpected directions. The novel starts as a serial-killer thriller, for there’s a murderer at work in Wrightsburg whose selection of victims appears random but whose modus operandi, differing from kill to kill, mimics the work of a notorious serial killer—the Zodiac killer, John Wayne Gacy, etc. The fifth victim is local resident and international tycoon Robert E. Lee Battle. King and Maxwell have already been tangling with the gothic horror show of a dysfunctional Southern family that is the Battles, as they’ve been hired to help prove the innocence of a Battle handyman accused of stealing from the family. Then that handyman is murdered, and the duo (along with a clueless local sheriff and an obnoxious FBI agent) must race to figure out if the same killer is behind all the murders and, if so, why. There are terrific action sequences sprinkled throughout, and plenty of suspense, and the King/Maxwell relationship, while not romantic, emits sparks. It’s Baldacci’s portrayal of smalltown Southern life, however, and his sharp characterizations of the Battles, from the bombastic Bobby and his regal widow to his weird extended family, that give the novel texture and depth: this is Baldacci’s most accomplished tale since his nonthriller Wish You Well, and it rivals that novel in its social commentary. Despite fair clues, few if any readers will ID the villain (villains?) before they’re revealed, and a snappy surprise ending will have Baldacci’s many fans remembering why they love this author so much.

The Hardy Boys, Three Complete Case Files

The Hardy Boys, Three Complete Case Files

by Franklin W. Dixon

Three Books in ONE :

1. The Lazarus Plot

2. Edge of Destruction

3. The Crowning Terror

PRICE : IDR 50.000,- (used, great condition)

Armada Publisher, 1993,  ISBN 0-00-694398-5, 472 pages, english, paperback

The Hardy Boys, Frank and Joe Hardy, are fictional teenage brothers and amateur detectives who appear in various mystery series for children and teens. The characters were created by Edward Stratemeyer, the founder of the Stratemeyer Syndicate, a book-packaging firm, and the books have been written by many different ghostwriters over the years. The books are published under the collective pseudonym Franklin W. Dixon.

The Hardy Boys have evolved in various ways since their first appearance in 1927. Beginning in 1959, the books were extensively revised, largely to eliminate racist stereotypes. The books were also written in a simpler style in an attempt to compete with television. Some critics argue that in the process the Hardy Boys changed, becoming more respectful of the law and simultaneously more affluent, “agents of the adult ruling class” rather than characters who aided the poor. A new Hardy Boys series, the Hardy Boys Casefiles, was created in the 1980s, and featured murders, violence, and international espionage. The original Hardy Boys Mystery Stories series ended in 2005. A new series, Undercover Brothers, was launched the same year, featuring updated versions of the characters who narrate their adventures in the first person.

Through all these changes, the characters have remained popular. The books sell more than a million copies a year. Several additional volumes are published annually, and the boys’ adventures have been translated into more than 25 languages. The Hardy Boys have been featured in computer games and five television shows and used to promote merchandise such as lunchboxes and jeans. Critics have offered many explanations for the characters’ longevity, suggesting variously that the Hardy Boys embody simple wish-fulfillment, American ideals of masculinity, American ideals of white masculinity, a paradoxically powerful but inept father, and the possibility of the triumph of good over evil. The Road to Gandolfo, a novel by Robert Ludlum

The Road to Gandolfo

a novel by Robert Ludlum

PRICE IDR 35.000,- (used, good condition)

Granada, 1976, ISBN 0-586-04375-6, 315 pages, english, paperback

REVIEW :

In this wickedly funny novel, Robert Ludlum combines the explosive pacing of The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy with a bitingly witty send-up of everything from government bureaucrats and pandering military men to the mob, the law, and organized religion.

War hero and infamous ladies’ man, General MacKenzie Hawkins is a living legend. His life story had even been sold to Hollywood. But now he stands accused of defacing a historic monument in China’s Forbidden City. Under house arrest in Peking, with a case against him pending in Washington, it looks like the end of Mac’s illustrious career.

But he has a plan of his own—and it includes kidnapping the Pope. What’s the ransom? Just one American dollar—for every Catholic in the world. Add to the mix a slew of shady “investors,” Hawkins’s four persuasive, well-endowed ex-wives, and a young lawyer and fellow soldier who wants nothing more than to return to private life—and you’ve got one relentlessly irreverent page-turner.

A wickedly funny Robert Ludlum you’ve never met before. All the explosive paving of The Bourne Identity, the Byzantine treachery of The Parsifal Mosaic, the relentless action of The Bourne Ultimatum. The Principal Cast: General Mackenzie Hawkings, legend, hero, rogue. Sam Devereaux, bright young lawyer from Harvard, now in the army, can’t wait to get out. General Hawken’s four ex-wives, a quartet of incredibly endowed women who’ve formed a club: Hawkin’s Harem. The Premise: Kidnap Pope Francesco I, the most beloved pontiff since John XX III. Ransom: One American dollar for every Catholic in the world. The Problem: Pope Francesco I says: “Gentle souls, why not?”

REVIEW :

“A tale of awesome revenge.”—The Cincinnati Enquirer on The White Plague

“A speculative intellect with few rivals in modern SF.”—The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction

What if women were an endangered species?

Anarchy and violence consume the planet.

The plague is the work of a solitary individual who calls himself the Madman. Jaws, a novel by Peter Benchley

Jaws

a novel by Peter Benchley

PRICE : IDR 35.000,- (used, good conditon)

Bantam Books, 1975, ISBN 553-04942-142, 309 pages, english, paperback

REVIEW

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Benchley’s novel, while better known as the source material for Steven Spielberg’s classic movie, has earned its own stripes as a small gem of suspense fiction. With another summer fast approaching, audio listeners may be interested in revisiting the town of Amity, Long Island, and getting back in the water. Erik Steele, a theater and film actor, chomps into Benchley’s raw prose with appetite, enjoying every bite of gore and social observation. Making ample use of well-placed pauses and silences, Steele amplifies not only the suspense, but Benchley’s surprisingly well-honed characterizations. The experience, of course, is markedly different from Spielberg’s film, offering shocks less visceral and more contemplative. A Random House hardcover. (Apr.)

The Moneychangers

a novel by Arthur Hailey

PRICE : IDR 40.000,- (used, good condition)

Bantam Books, 1976, ISBN 0-553-02300-4, 504 pages, paperback

REVIEW :

What did I know about banks before? A little! But since I read this book, I knew more about banks and the dillemas they face amidst the ordinary revolution of this naive world. It offers a view of a collapsing realm of economy, that which holds the blood line of society. Good!

This book is one of Arthur Hailey’s best books and well worth reading, both for insights into another industry (which Hailey always does well) and for well-constructed characters.

REVIEW

by Roger J Buffington

Our world as it might have been. The world stands at the brink of a nuclear showdown. Canada seeks survival in this uncertain time. This is the formula that makes for an unusually insightful and even profound story about ordinary people living against this extraordinary backdrop.

This novel features excellent character development, and is a wonderful story of political intrigue, calculation, human weakness and ultimately the power of the human spirit. In fact, I rank this novel easily as Hailey’s best, and it also ranks as one of my all-time favorites.

I learned more about Canada and the Canadian government reading this novel than I did in a semester of “The Politics of Canada” at UCLA. No kidding–this is a fascinating novel that tells a great story while acquainting the American reader with much of interest about our neighbor to the north.
